Leli’s Life: An original continuing story

By Morgan Mendonca, High School Freshman and Btweens Fiction Writer

Once upon a time there lived the most popular girl in all the land…..this is how I wish my story started off, but unfortunately, it doesn’t. No, my name is Leli (short for Leilani) and I attend Mooney Middle School in the fabulous state of California, and just to put it lightly, I am not the most well-known girl in school. At my school, there are the jocks, the populars, the nerds, the drama kids, and even the kids that hate cliques “clique” and for some strange reason, I’m not any of them. I have never been in any of them, and I don’t think I ever will.

I have exactly 2 friends, and to me, that’s all I need. First, there is Ems the crazy, exciting one that always knows the answer to everything. She kinda makes me sane and drives me insane at the same time, if that makes sense. Then, there’s Parker. I call him my own personal thesaurus, dictionary, calculator, and search engine. He is so calm compared to Ems and me, but that’s why we love him so much.

I remember when the three of us met. We were in the second grade and the class was working on some project that the teacher gave us. It was the three of us at a table, and we were all very shy. The next thing I notice is that Ems was trying to steal my glitter crayons and Parker was talking about something I couldn’t even understand back then. And, that’s how it all started.  Four years later, and it’s the same thing, except Parker got way smarter and Ems dropped the crayons and is now taking my clothes.

My older sister, Veronica, is the polar opposite of me. She was the one who was voted most popular and prettiest whatever during all of middle school. Sometimes, well most of the time, I get compared to her, but I feel I am confident enough in myself that it usually doesn’t affect me. EXCEPT, there is one person at my school that makes sure it does, Adrienne Dalton. She is pretty much exactly like my sister, “popular.” But, there’s one thing that separates them, Adrienne is EVIL!  Oh, and boy do I have a story for you…..

FLASHBACK to the 4th grade and you’ll understand why Adrienne and I don’t like each other.

Our class was having elections for class president and naturally, Adrienne volunteers. I’m thinking that she’s going to win and use all her power against me. I guess Ems and Parker were thinking the same exact thing, and they somehow persuaded me into running against her. I raise my hand to tell the teacher I would like to join the election and Adrienne gives me the stare-of-death look. I give myself a pat on the back and start thinking of ways, with Ems and Parker as my sidekicks, to defeat her.

That day, the three of us all meet at Ems’ house and immediately start making posters and writing speeches (we left that up to Parker, obviously). We are thinking we’ve got this in the bag and there is NO WAY Adrienne can beat us.

So, for the whole next week, we campaigned everyday at lunch time. Adrienne and I would battle to the death on the stage and tell the crowd “I promise tater tots everyday” or “I promise to make sure all the basketballs have air at lunch,” you know important stuff in the 4th grade. I was feeling so confident because every time I spoke, the crowd would roar, and whenever “she” spoke, pretty much the only people clapping would be her little followers.

So, the day came and we were ready to see the results. The whole 4th grade class piled into one room and Adrienne and I stood at the front. The whole group of people did the drum roll then the teacher told them to quiet down. “Now I want both of you to know that you both did an amazing job and congrats to whomever wins. Now, without further ado, the winner is…… Miss Adrienne Dalton.” The crowd was silent as Little Miss Popular went to accept her prize. My heart sank and I didn’t understand how this happened. Then, all of a sudden, everyone started chanting my name and booing Adrienne. I couldn’t believe it. I looked over to Adrienne and she actually almost looked like she was going to cry. And me, being “The Bigger Person” got in front of the crowd and said, “Everyone, why are you booing her? She won fair and square, and we are all going to have to accept that. So please, show some respect.” The crowd shushed and gave her a quiet applause.

Now, you may be wondering how this could lead to our rivalry, but this story hasn’t ended yet.

So, after the election, Adrienne came up to me with a big fake smile on her face. “Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for quieting down the crowd, it made my victory a lot more enjoyable. But, I also wanted to tell you that I really didn’t win ‘fair and square’ so to say. Actually, the genius me went and switched out all the ballots to make sure I won. Well, I guess it’s true what they say, nothings fair in love and…..elections. Bye!” Then she walked off with that little smirk on her face.

So there, does it make sense now? Believe me, all I wanted to do in that moment was tell on her and get revenge. But, a feeling in me said…she has it coming.
